KIMBE have re-established their presence on the national rugby union sevens scene following 15-City Pirates’ 31-0 win over Madang’s 6B Pirates in the Sports Tok Sevens plate final in Port Moresby yesterday.
Following an exhilarating start to their campaign, the Kimbe-based Pirates fell short of the Cup playoffs before qualifying for the plate finals at Bava Park.
Under the guidance of veteran Leo Tikot Jr, 15-City posted five unanswered tries to claim K500 in prize money.
Former Kimbe Rebel and 15-City skipper Tikot said it was a different side with the bulk of his players coming from a rugby league nines background. “I’m one of the few Kimbe Rebels players left in this side but with the help of our coaches, we managed to get a few boys from rugby league and teach them our style of rugby,” he said.
“I’m very happy with how they’ve developed.
“They adapted our style of play quickly which allowed us to reach the plate final.” Meanwhile, the conclusion of the tournament yesterday saw the presentation of a Cup by host Sports Tok to East Sepik Rugby Union.
Union president Emmanuel Tomarum said the Cup would be the major prize for the Greater Sepik Cup scheduled for Wewak next year.
