THE Sports Tok rugby union sevens tournament is aiming to create more opportunities with interest from rugby league franchises to scout potential talents for next year’s Digicel Cup season.
Tournament host Benson Upas said the annual tournament had gained interest from the rugby league community with opportunities to unearth new talents and showcase players on a bigger stage.
“We had some discussions with a few coaches and they said that they would come around to see if they can recruit players,” he said.
“Rugby union’s shorter format has good finishers in the game and in rugby league, you want talented players to finish off set plays.
“We had the Mendi Muruks coach and Port Moresby Vipers officials visit and watch a few matches.
“It’s all about creating opportunities for players, not just for rugby union but rugby as a whole.”
Upas said for rugby union, the tournament was good to track the progress of current sevens representatives and to also do scouting.
