An urban village in Port Moresby has invested K49,000 in a water project, according to its councilor.
Kira Kira village councilor Arutu Bake said he used the funds to buy 49 water tanks for the 180 houses in the village.
The water tanks are 1000 litres.
Bake said funding for the tanks came from the Motu-Koita Assembly and Tabudubu Ltd, which is a subsidiary of the assembly.
He said the village had been facing water outages in the past.
Villagers had been forced to carry buckets and small containers to fetch water from public taps at Sabama Market, which is adjacent to the village. Bake said the tanks would be distributed equally among villagers with house to have access to a tank.
The villagers received the tanks last Friday.
Bake also said having a close partnership with the Port Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko had benefitted the village.
He said more than 50 villagers were employed in the construction of the Port Moresby South sewage facility at Joyce Bay.
Bake said Tkatchenko had also helpedthrough purchasing school uniforms for students from the village.
Tkatchenko commended Bake for his proactive approach to development in Kira Kira.
