Medical equipment seen as tool to improve health

Health issues in the country will improve if Government funds are invested in buying advanced medical technology equipment, says a medical officer.
Dr John Tonar, head of nuclear medicine at Sir Joseph Nombri Hospital in Chimbu, said the country would improve its health situation if there was equipment available.
Nuclear medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the use of radioactive substances in research, diagnosis, and treatment.
“If we have advanced medical equipment in hospitals then we would save many lives and people would not waste money seeking overseas treatment,” Tonar said.
He said some diseases need proper and advanced technological equipment to diagnose people’s illnesses before proper treatment was provided.
Tonar urged Health Department to focus on buying advance technological equipment.
He said focusing on microbiology and histopathology medical services would improve the country’s health services.
Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, those being unicellular (single cell), multicellular (cell colony), or acellular (lacking cells).
Microbiology covers sub-disciplines like virology, parasitology, mycology and bacteriology.
