Kite surfing challenge to cap off initiative in Central village

The Central village of Hula will play host to the first ever Kite Surf Classic this weekend.
The first of its kind, the event is organised by social enterprise Swell for Good, StratCom PNG, the PNG SME Business Magazine and local kite surfer Benny Vanoka.
Five kite surfers arrived from Sydney on Saturday and spent the last few days doing an education outreach to teach students about the sport and the importance of keeping the ocean clean.
The surfers organised a movie night and screened for the first time the surf movie produced in Vanimo — Splinters.
Swell for Good believes kite surfers can contribute to social projects whilst travelling.
Co-host Andrew Runawery, from PNG SME Business Magazine, said Swell for Good offered the perfect balance between kite surfing and people connections.
“We met local entrepreneurs who were looking for business information, mentoring and support, and we organised workshops,” Runawery said.
“We’re promoting the better side of Hula — its people, its culture and tourism in sport on a global scale.
“Kite surfing is now an Olympic sport and we hope to send a rep from Hula to the next Olympics.”
Runawery thanked the people of Hula for their warm reception and PNG Surfing Association president Andrew Able for his support towards the initiative.
The week-long initiative ends tomorrow with the Kite Surf Classic.
