KOBONI clawed University Tigers by 28 points at the Colts Oval on Saturday to keep their Port Moresby Australian Football League finals hopes alive.
It was the all-round experience of PNG Mosquitoes stalwarts Stanis Susuve, Amua Pirika, Paul Philip, Brendan Beno and David Topeni that worked wonders in the 8.3 (51) to 3.5 (23) victory.
One-time Kobonis Douglas Lai Jr, John James Lavai, Dominic Evere Jr, Andrew Lai and Max Lavai tried their best for Tigers, but their former side continued their solid form in the Moni Plus-sponsored league.
Koboni led 2.0 (14) to 0.1 (1) at the first break and extended their lead to 5.0 (30) to 1.3 (9) at halftime.
They then sealed the match with a 3.3 (21) to 2.3 15) scoreline in the second half.
In the earlier match on Saturday, Gerehu Magpies surprised Gordon Kokofas with an impressive final-quarter scoring spree to win 14.5 (89) to 14.2 (86).
The victory was, however, overturned in favour of Kokofas on technical grounds after Magpies had 19 players on the field at the start of the second quarter forcing an unfair advantage over the Kokofas.
At the time, Magpies had scored just one goal, so it was removed from their final score to see the Gordon’s based club take a three-point win on Saturday.
