AFTER more than 50 years, the Vunamami United church on Williams Road in Kokopo town, East New Britain, will receive a K40,000 facelift.

East New Britain Governor and Kokopo MP Ereman ToBaining Jr made the financial commitment at a celebrant mass for pioneering builders and architects of the church last Sunday.

The commitment supports the congregation’s decision to replace the church with a new one to cater for the growing population and changing face of Kokopo town.

Most importantly, the ceremony marked the start of a new era to rebuild the church in a spirit of unity in the community.

ToBaining put aside past differences and shook hands with political opponent Jack Woiwoi in the true Melanesian spirit.

ToBaining, who is also chairman of the Kokopo joint district planning and budget priority committee, also pledged K10,000 to extend the Vunamami Community Hall to be sourced from the committee funds.

ToBaining also gave the church two new grass-cutters to keep the church yard clean.
