THE national electronic identification (e-ID) card project is expected to provide a secure, simple and universal method of citizen identification in Papua New Guinea, project director Roko Koloma said.

He said recently in Kokopo, East New Britain, that the national e-ID project would provide a unified national population information database for the 7.1 million people in the country. It will also serve as a national identification card for all citizens 17 years and over.

He said it would be an important tool for the national government in planning and monitoring, especially in the district and provincial level.

Koloma said the national e-ID card system would form the foundation for all e-applications in future.

The e-ID card will contain information such as name, sex, age, occupation, residential address. It is also a central database on all people of PNG.

Koloma said the e-ID solution platform would also allow card holders to access a number of e-applications which used ICT to improve general government and business efficiency.

The e-ID based Population Information Management System (PIMS) will also help decision-making in the areas of election, statistics, civil registration, education and health care.
