GULF Province Sports Trust chief executive Lawrence Lahari has challenged Gulf Komara to “go the extra mile” next season in the National Soccer League.
He said that last Wednesday during a presentation of Christmas food hampers to the players and officials of the club.
“Komara were second on the ladder when the season ended prematurely (last month,)” Lahari told The National.
“Out of the eight games played, Gulf Komara won six, drew one and lost one.
“With five more games left, Komara were pushing for a successful season.
“But unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19), this was not meant to be.
“But I thank the players, coaches and the management for their efforts in the 2021 season.”
Meanwhile, head coach David Aua said their focus now was to prepare for the upcoming season.
“If it wasn’t for the premature ending, Komara would have made the finals and possibly the grand final,” he said.
“The team will now focus on the 2022 season.
“We have learnt from last season and look forward to improving in the new campaign.
“We paid tribute to Gulf Province Sports Trust chairman, the late Imbi Tagune, for his tireless efforts in getting Komara to where they are now.
“The squad were released last month, but we just called them back to get their allowances and Christmas hampers.”
When asked when the team were expected to kick off pre-season training, Aua said that would depend on the dates for the new season.
Komara are one of the few teams in the league that had been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, which is a requirement for the 2022 season.
