THE Education Department’s focus will be on developing more text books to address the shortage of text books in schools, an official says.
Secretary Dr Uke Kombra said this in response to the shortage of school materials in school.
“With whatever funds we receive from the Government, we will now focus on the development of text books or the procurement and supply of text books going forward,” he said.
Kombra said it was a challenge across the country and most schools asked for project fees and used the money to buy text book.
He said it cost a lot to buy one text book and some parents could afford it, however, others would depend on schools and the department was trying its best to help.
Kombra said there should be no problem with the standards-based curriculum (SBC) teaching materials because teachers could use the same materials or resources to teach, only the teaching method had changed.
He said according to the Education Department, there were teaching guides and syllables that had content from prep to grade 12 and teacher’s guide that divide all this content into teachable units which subjects to teach on which terms.
Kombra said there were student’s resources books which teachers could be using to teach the lesson under SBC.
He said the only challenges should be limited text books and space to accommodate students which the department was working towards addressing.
Kombra encouraged students to use the resources wisely and not to damage any school materials as it cost a lot of money.
