NATIONAL defender Alwin Komolong has joined Lae City as the reigning champions, including Ecuadorians Gustine Icaza and Abdias Aguirre, await the resumption of the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League.
Franchise owner Ian Chow told The National yesterday that the former Madang star joined the Lae Biscuit Company-sponsored side from Fijian club Ba over the weekend.
“His brother Felix has been with us for some weeks now,” he said as the country’s premier football competition remains suspended over the coronavirus pandemic.
“Alwin flew in from Fiji via Australia before the travel ban.
“He completed his 14-day isolation in Port Moresby and then went to Madang before he joined camp over the weekend.
“The bulk of the team, especially the younger players, are in camp doing their own training.
“With the lockdown in place, some of them have nowhere else to go so they are making the most of the situation in camp.”
Meanwhile, Chow said Icaza and Aguirre were happy to remain in the country and complete the season despite the pandemic.
“They are stuck here doing their own training and keeping themselves focused while waiting for the season to resume,” he said.
“There are more people dying in Ecuador compared with Papua New Guinea so they are happy to stay here.
“There are travel restrictions all over the world so what else can they do? They are happy to stay and continue training.” Chow re-affirmed Lae Biscuit Company’s support of the five-time champions despite the country doing it tough amid the pandemic.
