CRICKET Papua New Guinea (CPNG) general manager Lee McDowell says the governing body is optimistic about the sport’s survival amid the coronavirus threat in the country.
He told The National yesterday that sports had a way of influencing people regardless of what was happening around the world.
“We will get through this as there are better times ahead,” McDowell said as all CPNG activities remain suspended due to the Government’s extension of the nationwide State of Emergency.
“Sports will play a big part in the recovery process as people get to play what they love and forget about all their concerns while they immerse themselves in fun.
“For those in our community who are lucky enough to play their sport of choice for a living, they too will have a big part to play.
“Papua New Guineans get much pride and motivation from seeing their heroes do well on the world stage.
“So at this point, we can’t wait to get the Barramundis back training together and focusing on this year’s T20 World Cup, and providing inspiration and enjoyment to PNG.
“We are making decisions on the run as we are provided with more information from the Government and our partners.
“For now, we must all follow the national guidelines for our health and safety. We are all in this together — one team who will defeat the pandemic.”
Meanwhile, the Barramundis and Lewas (women’s team) players are doing their own personal training and keeping fit during the coronavirus lockdown.
