RUGBY league followers in the remote Kompian-Ambum district in Enga are gearing up for the Nakau Cup rugby league competition.

Kompiam Rugby Football League chairman James Timil told The National that the competition was expected to kick off next month and run for 48 weeks.

He said defending champions, Waghi Knights, would be among 12 teams confirmed to compete in this year’s competition.

Timil said community-oriented social activities such as Kompiam Rugby League had a positive effect on the life of the youths and stamped out illegal activities such as the consumption of homebrew and marijuana.

He acknowledged Kompiam elite, Rex Nakau Kiponge for financially supporting the competition.

Timil said last year, Kiponge committed K30,000 and this year, had increased that to K50,000 to support Kompiam League to stage the Nakau Cup.

The winner of the competition will walk away with the cup and K10,000 cprizemoney.

Kiponge said in Port Moresby that he had committed K50,000 which was an increase of K20,000 from last year.

“I believe in the potential of this young population,” Kiponge said.

“There are many potential rugby players out there in the Kompiam-Ambum district and through this sponsorship, I am exposing individual players in the public arena to showcase their talent,” he said.

He called on Kompiam elites and stakeholders for their support of the competition.

Kiponge said interested clubs wishing to compete should see Timil, who was the Kompiam station ward councilor, to register.
