KUMUL Petroleum Holdings Ltd (KPHL) has given nearly K145,000 to the University of Technology (Unitech) in Lae for the purchase of equipment for the engineering course.
KPHL managing director Wapu Sonk gave a cheque for K144,534.53 to enable Unitech to improve the programmes to meet the Washington Accord – an agreement between selected governing bodies around the world that provide engineering degree acceleration.
Sonk said the benefit of being part of the accord was that it established a benchmark for professional engineering education across countries.
“The accord provides assurance that if an engineering degree is awarded by one of its member countries, the degree is then recognised by all other members,” he said.
He said PNG was not a member yet but “we are progressing towards that because it will give worldwide recognitions to PNG engineers”.
The funds will be used to buy equipment for foundation subjects under a new programme to be rolled out next year.
