Kua seeks clearer Apec picture

SINASINA-Yongomugl MP Kerenga Kua says Parliament needs to be properly informed of what is behind the hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings.
Kua in response to the Apec report presented by Minister Justin Tkatchenko on Wednesday, said in the process of preparing and spending millions of kina in the project, what will PNG sell?
“What trade package are you preparing to sell on behalf of this country to the buyers coming for the Apec leaders’ summit?
“We have to prepare our products for the best possible outcomes,” he said.
“We have natural resources, fisheries, forestry, oil, gas and minerals.
“There’s going to be a platform developed to sell each of these industries.
“In agriculture, what will we be offering in terms of land mobilisation and land security and development, quarantine issues, tax and tariffs, education opportunities and trade tariffs that exist between countries?
“We have to have a clear platform that needs to be considered – written out and bought to this parliament for a clear and complete picture.
“I’m encouraging the minister to give it a bit more thought to give us a real purpose and meaning behind this.”
Commerce and Industry Minister Wera Mori said Apec was all about creating opportunities and maximising these and derive benefits.
He said businessmen and women were able to establish dialogue with others throughout the world.
“I will present a statement about how to open up the country to maximise the outcome of Apec, the free trade zones, agro industries that we are creating.
“There will be pathways to that.”
