COFFEE Minister Joe Kuli plans to increase the production and export of coffee.
He thanked the Government for creating ministries to look after coffee and oil palm, and promoting renewable resources to develop the national economy.
Kuli, Anglimp-South Waghi MP, said the plan was to revive coffee plantations, address coffee market issues such as pricing and securing markets.
“One key area would be the replanting of new coffee plantations,” he said.
“Coffee was one of PNG’s top three income earners from the 1960s to the 1990s, with export volumes around one million bags each year,” he said.
“But it had decreased in recent years.
He said coffee would generate revenue for people in the villages.
“Being a coffee grower myself, it has been my passion to improve the production of coffee,” he said.
Kuli hopes to work with the Coffee Industry Corporation in the supervision, training and licensing of the coffee farmers and coffee associations in the country.
