DESPITE being in the toughest pool at the Rugby League World Cup Nines, the Kumuls will focus on the basics as they look to surprise hosts Australia and New Zealand tomorrow.
Captain Rhyse Martin has been vocal about his side not being distracted by the hype surrounding the Kangaroos and Kiwis, who are ranked No.1 and No.2 respectively in the 13-man game.
The Leeds Rhinos forward said last week in Port Moresby that though they respected the heavyweights, his side were more into appreciative of their own strengths and what they can offer.
“We respect them (Australia and New Zealand),” Martin said.
“But we’ve just got to enjoy it. It’s the inaugural Rugby League World Cup Nines and we’ll try to enjoy every moment of it.
“The concept of this game is just open football. Some of our boys have got great skills, speed and power.
“It will be perfect for them in the nines and we are excited to see what they can bring to the table.
“With the talent we have, I believe we will put in really good performances against those guys (Australia and New Zealand).”
Head coach Michael Marum also shared similar sentiments about playing Australia and New Zealand but was more concerned with the side’s defensive structures.
“We need to communicate a lot more in defence,” Marum said.
“We’ve got the speed and we can score tries but we just have to get our defensive structures right.
“We don’t want to worry too much about our opponents.
“We just have to get little things right and create enough chances for ourselves.”
Martin and Melbourne Storm centre Justin Olam will add experience to the side, with Edene Gebbie expected to slot in at fullback for the two-day tournament, which starts today at Bankwest Stadium.
