Lack of funding crippling efforts against sea piracy

POLICE Minister Robert Atiyafa says police are handicapped to combat sea piracy in maritime provinces due to funding issues.
He said he made a submission to the  National Executive Council  but did not receive the required funds to buy boats due to financial constraints in the Government.
“I want to thank all the MPs, ministers and governors who have been assisting police in terms of providing housing, vehicles and boats in their provinces and districts,” Atiyafa said.
He also thanked the Government for allocating over K275 million over five years for the police modernisation programme.
“Through that programme, we were supposed to  have funded boats for the police water units,” Atiyafa said.
“However, more than 50 per cent of the funding was recalled.”
