PORT Moresby Suburban Rugby League received a double blow this week with its 2021 grand finals postponed and representative team disqualified from the Southern Super League finals.
League chairman James Paul told The National that their major sponsor, the National Capital District Commission (NCDC), was yet to release their funds for the 2021 season.
He said the lack of support saw the grand finals put off for a second time while representative team, Suburban Ducks, were disqualified over outstanding registration fees.
“Port Moresby Suburban League will put its grand finals on hold due to financial difficulties and our major sponsor, NCDC, is yet to release our 2021 grants to run the competition,” Paul said.
“Ducks made it into the top-six of the Southern Super League.
“But unfortunately, they were disqualified due to outstanding fees.
“Due to the Coronavirus, sponsors pulled out from our competition.
“For the first time, were yet to complete the season with the grand finals. We’ve informed all the clubs that made it to the grand finals to wait until we have money to run the matches. We will call for our annual general meeting and elect league executives after the grand finals.
“We invite business houses or corporate entities to assist our league because everything we do here goes back to the youths who take part in the competition.”
