Lae announces seasonal workers registration process

National

LAE MP John Rosso and the Lae-based Australian Consul-General Paul Murphy have initiated a partnership to help Papua New Guineans participate in Australia’s labour mobility programme.
There will be a screening process beginning February for the seasonal workers programme (SWP) and the Pacific labour scheme (PLS) partnership.
This is to establish a Lae-based pool of workers with required skills and attitudes to work in Australia.
The screening process will enable Australian employers to access the database to find needed employees who meet required criteria.
In a media statement, Rosso said the SWP and PLS were available for PNG nationals to work with approved Australian employers in rural and regional Australia for up to three years.
The Lae-based process will be open to students and recent graduates from the University of Technology, National Polytechnic Institute of Papua New Guinea and the Lae School of Nursing, as well as workers recommended by partner companies.
People who are interested should look out for information from their educational institute or employer.
The statement said the move follows recent successful recruitments from Madang and Enga, bringing the opportunity to participate in Australia’s labour market to more people in PNG.
The initiative in Lae is implemented by the Lae city authority.
