THE Lae City Authority has sponsored three top-performing rugby clubs in Morobe to support their 2024 campaigns.
Lae MP and deputy Prime Minister John Rosso said the clubs were ambassadors of Lae and the funding would encourage better sportsmanship.
Rosso said the authority was able to set aside funding to support sporting activities in the city through prudent management of taxpayer’s money.
“You have been great ambassadors of Lae and it’s only fitting that we give you the support you deserve to encourage good citizenship and sportsmanship in our city,” Rosso said.
The first association that received funding was two-time Sports Tok Sevens and 2022 Trans-Highway Sevens Champions Papuan Compound (PC) Ravens, who were boosted with K10,000 for their outstanding performances representing Lae in rugby sevens.
Morobe Rugby Football Union champions Lae Royals and runners-ups Tent City Lights were also given K10,000 each as part of the authority’s support towards sports development and healthy community initiatives.
“We are not just funding the codes, we have reclaimed all playing fields and sporting grounds in Lae and placed them under trust of the Lae City Authority so that we can improve these facilities for the benefit of our children to use,” Rosso said.
Rosso said other sporting codes would be supported this year once more funding was made available.
