SP Brewery has backed Lae Rugby League (LRL), under the care of administrator Adrian Chow, with K40,000 to help upgrade the venue.
SP Brewery Mamose and Highlands sales manager Denys Boikov made the presentation to Chow and league officer David Atua yesterday.
Boikov said SP Brewery recognised the importance of sports in bringing people together.
He said the company’s involvement in rugby league dated back to 1953 through its support of the game at the provincial, national and regional levels.
“As official beer of rugby league and the sponsor of the PNG Hunters, we present K40,000 to the Lae Rugby League to help develop the next generation of Hunters here in Morobe.
“The K40,000 was raised from the proceeds of the Hunters gala dinner and auctions held in July at the Lae Yacht Club during the country round Q-Cup between Hunters and North Devils.
“We believe that this support, along with strong leadership of Chow and his team at LRL, will go a long way to develop the code in Lae and Morobe.”
Boikov also acknowledged all the local business houses and government officials who purchased tables at the event and assisted in raising funds for LRL.
Chow commended SP Brewery for continuing to support rugby league.
“The funds will go towards improving the venue for a stronger local competition and higher standard of rugby league.
“The venue, once improved, will also allow LRL to host important matches against international teams.
“The visiting teams from Australia and England enjoyed the green playing surface.
“They also enjoyed the hospitality and culture of our people, and their experience. Such experiences promote interest in PNG and encourage more visitors.”
