A K30 million proposal for the Lae market redevelopment is now with the New Zealand government for funding.
Lae district chief executive officer Robin Calistus said the district, city council and Morobe government would be funding the project in partnership with the New Zealand government.
The project proposal was given to the New Zealand High Commission last year.
“The proposal with the design plan was submitted and is in the process of discussion and approval for funding, and construction to begin,” Calistus said.
He said Lae market redevelopment was expected to start this year and completed by next year.
The market redevelopment plan was done by construction company Hebou Construction Limited.
The company’s operation manager Stanley Rupo said they have produced two designs for the market.
The first was a simple design with three parallel buildings with six meters spacing.
The second was a complex building on the current market site.
“Some design features of Lae market redevelopment were water efficiency use,  passive design features-fresh air quality both inside and outside and efficient removable and dumping of waste in the proper place,” Rupo said.
