BUSINESS houses and individuals who access cargo through PNG Ports Corporation Ltd’s Lae and Port Moresby ports have a reason to smile this festive season.
The corporation has decided to offer discounts ranging between 10% and 50% on storage charges from Dec 15 to Jan 15 at both ports.
Chief executive officer Brian Riches said this was an opportunity for consignees to import more cargo and get them out of the ports quickly at reduced costs.
“These concessions will only be applied for cargo processed during the dates mentioned above,” Riches said.
All cargo storage was to be paid for at the time of delivery and removal from the port.
The discounts are:
l    50% concession on all storage charges for all cargo removed from the port before 20 days after landing;
l    30% concession on all storage charges for all cargo removed from the port after 20 days and before 30 days;
l    10% concession on all storage charges for all cargo removed from the port after 30 days and before 50 days after landing; and
l    No discount will be granted for all cargo removed from the port after 50 days after landing.
The PNG Ports management said some scaling down of operations over the Christmas-New Year festive period often resulted in the consignees of cargo being disadvantaged with storage charges applied on matters beyond the control of PNG Ports and the importers.
Riches said in deciding to provide relief to the importers, “there is the need for all stakeholders within the logistical supply chain to coordinate and ensure appropriate arrangements are put in place during the festive period to facilitate movement of goods into and out of the ports”.
