LAE Rugby Union (LRU) has named two men’s teams and a women’s side to represent Morobe at this weekend’s national sevens championships.
LRU has put forward the Lae Hammerheads Sharks and Lae Tiger Sharks in the men’s division and the LRU women’s side to compete in the tournament.
The recently-established LRU will be out to stamp their mark in sevens rugby and bring the spotlight back to the Morobe capital as it aims to promote the sport through the Supporters Club of Rugby Union in Morobe (Scrum) programme.
Coordinator Avea Hiarua said LRU was formed to create pathways for Scrum players.
Hiarua said a number of clubs that were with Morobe Rugby Union had joined LRU and he was confident of a strong performance at the championships.
“We will be competitive at the championships as we aspire to maintain our status as the top sevens playing centre,” he said.
“We also know that it’s not easy to maintain our pole spot as there will be stiff competition from other provincial unions looking to topple us.”
Hiaru also made a call for business houses in Lae to assist the sides prepare for the championships.
“LRU is providing a pathway for young players who come through the scrum programme and therefore, we call on business houses to come on board and support the teams,” he said.
“It is all for the benefit of rugby in Lae.”
He thanked players and supporters who had participated during the recent LRU sevens matches and made special mention of Morobe Procurement solutions and Designscope Architects for its financial support.
