PREPARATIONS are going smoothly at the Lae rugby league grounds for the the bemobile Cup grand final between SBS Muruks and Bintangor Lahanis on Sunday.
The organising committee said yesterday that maintenance work was progressing well with the support of Muruks franchise owner Tom Higgins, who had engaged a contractor to polish up the perimeters of the field.
“It is very impressive to see maintenance work already progressing on the outer grandstand, official grandstand, fencing, gates and other areas to ensure a successful grand final is staged,” League president Russ Kaupa said yesterday.
He said Higgins saw the need to refurbish the league premises and stepped in to the support.
“Higgins has put in a lot of effort. He is assisting us in  everything. I am so glad for his kindness.”
Kaupa said he was still not sure whether major sponsor, bemobile, was helping out in the preparations for the grand final.
He said SP Brewery had engaged another contractor to erect the billboards in and around the perimeters of the oval.
Kaupa added that they would be opening four gates to allow the crowd easy access to the grounds.
The gates will open at 9am.
The gate fees for the outer stands are K20 for adults and K5 for children under 12 years old while the fee for the grandstand is K60.
Meanwhile, all qualifying finals for the Lae league had been deferred to next week to allow for the bemobile Cup grand final.
Lae rugby league executive officer David Atua said the finals would be completed in three weeks.
“I thank Lae league club officials, players and fans for their support and behaviour throughout the season. Through their patience, Lae will host the bemobile Cup grand final since 1996 (SP Inter-city cup),” Atua said.
