Lae puts up billboards showing anti-pollution messages

THREE billboards showing anti-pollution messages have been put up around Lae city.
They are the initiative of the Wafi-Golpu Joint Venture, Lae City Authority and the Morobe government.
They feature drawings submitted during a poster competition conducted during World Environment Day last June.
Primary school students from Bowali, Amba, Butibam, Huonville, St Martin and Milfordhaven submitted drawings on the theme “Beat plastic pollution”.
The winning posters were displayed on the billboards. They were from Bridgette Pari and Joel Aru of the Bowali Primary School, and Clyde Darius of St Martin Primary School.
“We’re very happy to see our drawings on the billboards,” Pari said.
She said plastic bags ended up in the sea and littered the beaches when they were washed ashore.
“We’re happy to play our part in increasing awareness on the problem and we hope citizens take ownership in banning single-use plastics,” Pari said.
WGJV’s Head of External Affairs, David Wissink said the three billboards were to help the reduction of single-use plastic bags.
“Plastic disposal is a significant problem for Lae and hence we want to help remind people to stop using plastics and turn to using biodegradable or reusable bags,” he said.
“Besides with all the bilum in the country, why would we need plastic bags?”
