Lae roads a national shame: O’Neill

National, Normal

Works, Transport and Public Service Minister Peter O’Neill has described the condition of roads in Lae city as “a national embarrassment”.
Mr O’Neill visited Lae over the weekend to unveil a boat for the Nawaeb people.
He then took the opportunity to inspect the city’s road first hand since he was handed the Works portfolio by the Prime Minister last month, and came away disappointed.
“Lae is our industrial hub,” he said.
“It is our second biggest city, yet its roads are in such a poor condition, it is very embarrassing.
“The responsibility of maintenance has become a hot potato for politicians, but we have got to do something about this,” he said.
Mr O’Neill said he would direct his department to draw up a submission to bring to Cabinet to address the Lae road situation with urgency.
“The road conditions are demoralising and energy sapping for anyone.
“The residents and business houses in the city deserve better, and the Government will make sure they get the kind of roads they deserve.
“I urge politicians from the province to put aside their differences and support my department and the Government to address this.”
