ONE of the oldest schools in Lae had a K3.2 million multipurpose hall opened by local MP and former student John Rosso.
Lae Secondary School is a level 10 school and has a roll of 2,064 students.
Apart from the hall, new toilet facilities were also opened.
Rosso, who is also Lands and Physical Planning Minister, said the project would now benefit the students and teachers.
“You must be proud of this new infrastructure,” he said.
“It cost over K3mil and I commend the school board and contractor for a job well done.”
Rosso said with 90 per cent of the work done, he expected students to start using it soon.
“Many times we ask for handouts,” he said.
“We are not doing the right thing yet we still ask for handouts.
“It’s good that Lae secondary has taken the initiative and not waited for help.”
Rosso committed K400,000 on behalf of Lae City Authority board to the school to help them complete the hall.
“This year hopefully, depending on the cash flow, we’ll pay K200,000 and next year we’ll pay another K200,000,” he said.
“That commitment is from the LCA board to help complete the hall.”
Rosso said he had supported Malahang Technical Secondary School with K500,000 to construct a similar multipurpose hall as well as for some other school expenses.
Lae Secondary School board chairman Steven Mesa said they were pleased with having to undertake and complete a major school project.
“We can be proud that we came this far,” he said.
“We are preparing this hall so that our grade 10s and 12s will sit their examination in this room. The governing council has its own record of delivering new infrastructures and in every two years we at least deliver a building or two.
Mesa said the school had already paid K1.5mil so far.
