LAE Tennis Club received K10,000 from a business house yesterday for this weekend’s Panamex Tennis Singles Open in the Morobe capital.
The three-day tournament will start tomorrow afternoon at the club courts with the finals and presentation scheduled for Sunday.
Panamex Pacific (PNG) Limited general manager Erich Illemann said sponsoring the tournament would help raise the profile of the game in Lae and encourage players to improve their skills.
“When the club decided to hold a tennis singles competition, Panamex didn’t hesitate to come on board as the major sponsor,” he said.
“The club comprises a great group of people raising awareness on tennis, and dedicating their time and resources to growing the game and improving junior tennis in Lae.
“We are excited to have representation from Port Moresby with a selected national player also competing in the tournament.
“Panamex will look to sponsor this tournament annually and is excited to contribute towards growing the game in our community.”
Club president Glenn Cabasug acknowledged Panamex and Illemann, who is also an active committee member, for the support.
“Thanks to their support, we are finally able to hold our first singles open in more than 20 years,” he said. “This is crucial for Lae juniors as it provides a clear pathway for them to compete, gain experience and build their confidence.”
