ABOUT 60 leaders of youth groups in Lae have been endorsed to contest the six council wards in Lae district.

Church pastor and sponsor of the group, Fabian Peter, said he decided to bring together leaders of youth groups in the city for the sake of young people.

Peter said 10 candidates would be contesting the six council ward seats in Lae Urban.

He wants to see more empowerment for youths and financial support for councillors to enable them to be more effective as leaders.

“The youth network wants to see more youth-oriented leaders who understand their experience and will bring about a more promising future for them,” he said.

Peter, who is contesting the lord mayor’s seat, said he also wanted more financial autonomy for the lord mayor who at present was just a figure head.

He paid K200 nomination fees for each of the candidates.

“We are hoping that one of our members gets a place in the six wards,” he said.

A female candidate Roselyn Gore from Chimbu is contesting the Ward One seat.
