NOMINATIONS for presidents and ward councillors in the Morobe local level government elections are progressing well, according to the provincial electoral office.

Electoral Commission’s assistant election manager in Lae Freda Joses said they were expecting a big number of candidates in Morobe, the largest province in the country with nine districts and 33 LLGs.

Bulolo district has the highest number of LLGs with six, and council wards numbering 568.

Joses said it was possible that consideration might be given to candidates in areas who might have problems reaching their nearest nomination booths by 4pm today.

Meanwhile, two females were among 87 candidates nominated for the six council wards in the Lae Urban district as of yesterday afternoon.

Lae district returning officers said they were expecting more people to be nominated today, the final day for nomination.

Former Huon Gulf MP Tukape Masani was among 16 people who were nominated as of yesterday afternoon to contest the Lae lord mayor’s seat.

Incumbent James Khay is expected to be nominated today.
