A STUDENT died last weekend after he was attacked by four youths who wanted to take his tablet, acting Lae Met Supt Chris Kunyanban says.
He said the student from Chimbu was stabbed on the chest and hand at West Taraka on Friday, leading to his death.
Police managed to prevent a possible confrontation between the relatives of the deceased and suspects.
Relatives of the suspects under pressure from police surrendered the four. Police seized a kitchen knife allegedly used by the suspects to stab the student and recovered the tablet.
“The matter is under investigation and the situation there is quiet but still tense,” Kunyanban said.
Lae urban local level government ward six councillor at West Taraka Peter Wagu said the victim was a student of a secondary school in Lae who died on the way to hospital.
Wagu said community leaders there worked with police and acted swiftly in calming the situation and handing over the suspects to the police.
“Talks are in progress to get an agreement from both sides to come for a mediation and finally repatriate the body home.”
