Landowners served seven-day eviction notice

A SEVEN-day notice has been given to landowners of Mendi Secondary School in Southern Highlands who are illegally occupying teachers’ houses and living on school land to vacate starting today, interim chairman Sgt Jimmy Suaip says.
Sgt Suaip said if the schools’ property was not vacated after seven days, police and the PNG Defence Force would conduct the eviction. He said the school had been one of the best performing schools in the province but had been badly affected by a tribal fight in the early 2000s.
“It was slowly rebuilt over the years and had returned to being one of Southern Highlands’ best secondary schools,” Sgt Suaip said.
He said it was the only secondary school in Mendi where most public servants’ children went to school.
Sgt Suaip said parents were not happy with the action of landowners from Unjamap village, especially those occupying school buildings and land.
“Some teachers posted to the school cannot not move in as teachers who previously taught here were reluctant to leave,” he said.
