Constitutional and Law Reform Commission secretary Eric Kwa, pictured says that his office is reviewing the Cities Act to assist government planning.
Kwa said that Lae, Kokopo and Mt Hagen were the three new cities declared by the government and that they would review the Cities Act to try and align it with the legislations of the three new cities.
Kwa said the objective is to assist the government plan for other cities to be declared.
“There is a Cities Act that we had from 1971. We want to try and see if we could review the act to align it with the three new cities that have been declared, and that’s Lae, Kokopo and Mt Hagen,” Kwa said. “They have their own three different legislations but we want to see how we can align them with the Cities Act.
“That will also cascade down to the growth of districts and towns, so then we will have four regional cities, and then towns, and then stations at the lower levels.”
Kwa said his office was also reviewing laws on drugs and alcohol.
“The Government has given us the direction to look at the laws on drugs and alcohol and improve the laws.”
