LAWYER Robert Asa has been appointed president of the board of trustees of the National Museum and Art Gallery.
Tourism Art and Culture Minister Emil Tammur made the announcement after almost two years of the museum operating without a board.
Asa’s appointment took effect on May 25. Tammur said in a statement that the appointment of Asa reflected a wealth of knowledge and balance to drive the organisation forward.
Asa is a senior partner with the Warner Shand Layers.
Asa joins the board comprising Keryn Hargreaves, chairwoman of the Goroka Show, and Aki Tumu who is the director of Enga Takeanda Museum.
Two more appointments are expected to be made soon.
Tammur urged Asa to hold board meetings to address some of the outstanding issues affecting the museum.
“I expect the new board to be fully functional and to carry out its mandated duties of office without fear or favour,” he said.
Asa said he was humbled by the appointment and vowed to do his mandated duty as a trustee of the board honourably to serve the organisation and the country.
He said he had confidence in the new board members to provide the leadership and stated that: “There is a lot of work that needs to be done.
“We will do our utmost best to ensure the National Museum and Art Gallery is back on track to its former glory.”
