Leadership vital, Guinness says

POLICE officers who hold positions of command in the Northern region have been encouraged to be quality leaders with visions to improve policing
Acting commissioner of Police Northern command Peter Guinness said visionary and forward thinking leadership was what the constabulary needed to meet the demands of law enforcement.
“A leader with a vision will always try to think beyond and establish approaches that contribute to effective policing in the community,” he said.
Guinness said Lae metropolitan command, under former metropolitan superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr, had built a strong relationship with business houses and the community and was one of the success stories in the country. “Business houses have come onboard through donations and gifts to support the work of police in the command and that has come about through good leadership,” he said.
“The support that has come about over the years has been through the trust created in our work to serve the community.”
Guinness said the way forward in active and effective policing was to do it collectively with stakeholders and the community in order protect lives and properties and maintain law and order.
He said following set procedures and protocol and being competent and professional was the only way forward in earning the people’s respect and confidence.
“It is a two way thing, when you look after the community, then the people will look after you.”
