FORMER University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) rugby league player Albert Kamani says playing the sport had helped him connect with people of different ethnicities.
The 35-year-old, from Wapenamanda, Enga, started playing rugby league while he was in primary school in 1998.
In 2007, in his first year at tertiary level, Kamani and his course mates formed Hetura Cyclones in the UPNG Rugby Football League.
“Rugby league has moulded and liberated us from ethnic and provincial groups, and regionalism,” he said.
“At UPNG, we have shared responsibilities not only in sports but our schoolwork in terms of computers, printers, laptops and other essentials.
“The challenges I have gone through at school became a stepping stone to enhance my career in the workforce.
“I am mentally satisfied and physically fit because I have participated in many social gatherings.
“I gained popularity through the Port Moresby Rugby Football League and UPNG competitions.”
