KANDRIAN-Gloucester MP Joseph Lelang has called on the Government to assist his people after 14 villages were affected and more than 30 homes destroyed by floods in the electorate in West New Britain.
Food gardens were washed away.
Lelang said the flooding was caused by heavy rain. He said damage to the area was blamed on illegal logging activities in the area, with cleared land giving way easily under heavy soaking.
“I call on the Government to assist my people and also to investigate the illegal logging activities in my province,” Leland said.
Deputy Prime Minister Charles Abel said he was aware of recent heavy rain that had affected many parts of the country and he would get the National Disaster Office to address the matter.
“Though we have limited funding now, we will look into the matter,” Abel said.
“It is also our duty to protect the environment so we will also investigate the logging activities in the area to find out if the logging companies are complying with our laws.”
