Let’s create a safe, inclusive environment

CYBERBULLYING is an alarming phenomenon that has unfortunately become commonplace among Facebook users nowadays.
Despite being explicitly prohibited by the PNG constitution, individuals seem to disregard the consequences of their actions and continue to engage in this harmful behaviour.
It is evident that Papua New Guinea is ill-equipped to effectively address the challenges posed by modern social communication technologies, such as Facebook.
This is further emphasized by the country’s Human Development Index (HDI), which stands at 0.36 in 2023.
The current HDI level reflects the unpreparedness of the nation to embrace and regulate such technologies.
Regrettably, this lack of readiness has led to a significant increase in cyberbullying incidents, exemplified by the recent distressing case of two teenagers from POM Grammar School.
Their explicit video was leaked and subsequently circulated on various social media platforms.
While I do not condone the actions of the individuals involved, it is crucial to shed light on the wider issue of cyberbullying and the urgent need for humanitarian action in our country.
By highlighting the concerning prevalence of cyberbullying, I hope to bring attention to this critical matter and encourage a collective effort to combat this pervasive problem.
It is imperative for both the authorities and the society at large to recognise the detrimental impact of cyberbullying and take proactive measures to educate, raise awareness, and protect the well-being of individuals, particularly the vulnerable youth.
Together, let us strive to create a safe and inclusive online environment that fosters respect, empathy, and constructive interaction.
By doing so, we can foster a sense of digital citizenship and ensure the well-being of our fellow citizens.
