LETTERS IN BRIEF

Schools closed: People living in the remote Mt Bosavi LLG in Southern Highlands are concerned about their children’s education because five weeks after the start of the school year the primary schools at Walagu, Dodomona, Mt Bosavi and Muluma are still closed because the teachers have not yet arrived. Teachers always find it difficult to get to their remote schools. It has been 44 years since independence and no political leaders of Southern Highlands has bothered to talk about the problems faced by the schools and school children at Bosavi.

Art of the deal : So many deals directly involving senior ministers are being exposed. In the past two years we have heard of the Manumanu land deal, the yoga contract and PNG Gardener. Only one of these deals should be enough to make Government MPs cross the floor to the Opposition. This is the trend of thought in the minds of educated Papua New Guineans. Thanks to social media we are being better informed.

Wheeling and dealing: Is any man and his dog shocked or surprised by the revelation that the family of one of PNG’s politicians is directly benefiting from Paladin’s $423 million worth of security contracts on Manus Island? It was awarded by the Scott Morrison government “in a closed tender”. This kind of wheeling and dealing in big-money government contracts has become something of a norm, hasn’t it?
