THE national women’s cricket squad are training in Albury, New South Wales, for the Australian Cricket Country Championships (ACCC) which begin tomorrow.
Head coach Kath Hempenstall said this would be the start of the team’s preparation for the Twety-20 World Cup qualifiers, in which the Lewas will compete later this year.
“The Lewas have not played any cricket outside of Port Moresby for more than years, so there is plenty of excitement among the group,” she told The National.
“Our focus for this tour is on development and providing the squad some match practice.
“We will play eight games in the championships, which will be a great opportunity for the Lewas to build on their preparations for a big season of international cricket.”
Last month, the Lewas played friendly matches against Under-19 teams from Victoria as part of their preparations for the tournament.
“We played four T20 matches against the Victorian Country and Metro U19 teams in Melbourne,” Hempenstall said.
“From the four matches, we won one and lost three. “Understandably, the squad are a little rusty, having not played cricket for so long.
“However, we displayed great improvement in each game.
“We had great support for our matches, with Melbourne Storm centre Justin Olam and five-time Olympian Dika Toua in attendance.”
