ROAD Traffic Authority (RTA) chief executive officer Nelson Terema wants the public to report any mistreatment or abuse from public service vehicle operators by calling the RTA hotline on 76505044.
He told The National that the public could report buses not completing routes, unfair increase of fares and other forms of abuse.
This includes taxis.
“We need the partnership and cooperation of commuters and passengers to ensure that public transport is functioning well,” he said.
He said RTA was not always on the road and could not keep up with every issue in public transport.
“We are not always aware of what is happening on the road so we need to partner and work together,” Terema said.
“Most times, buses do not complete their routes, unfairly increase bus fares and drop passengers wherever they wish to.”
“The public can report by providing details of the vehicles’ plate numbers, time, location, and route numbers so RTA can deal with them,” Terema said.
He said RTA was not able to enforce social distancing and other measures during the state of emergency period but would do so in the coming weeks.
“We will be able to provide the number of vehicles that were impounded next week and onwards.
“We have not done any enforcement in the last three months but we are continuing to perform other duties such as licensing and registration of vehicles.” Terema said public buses were expected to charge K1 for fares and nothing more.
“The K1.50 charge was only for the SOE period,” Terema said.

  • This issue needed immediate attention by relevant authorities. It is very sad to learn PMV operators overcharging School students especially Primary and Secondary. little money provided by the parents are been excused with connections buses who charge extra apart from the normal charges. For instance, Bus 9 route from Gerehu to 4 mile charge K2 in early hours when students rush to early morning class; this has left many hunger while in school. Please RTA look into this. we will report on the hotline number provided if any of the acts been committed again by any route.

  • Can the RTA impound old buses, they are a risk to the city and general public and passengers on board.

  • RTA Chief or boss needs to wake from his long sleeping modes. Main roads needs to be repainted and traffic lights especially Waigani-Gerehu traffic light needs to be closely monitored. Some PMV buses don’t have dim, head, signals and parking lights and by 6:30pm they travel with double-blinks only. All old buses with broken torn sheets and holes on the floor should be grounded! About time, Govenment must revoke and remove the current RTA boss. He’s a liability. He’s a talkful but inactive actions. RTA needs a complete overhawl.

  • Place hotline number (adhesive stickers) on all registered PMVs and taxis for people to easily call and report abuse.

  • We have bus number 4 taking the freeway from Gordons and to Town or Hanuabada and charge K2 and likewise line up at Konedobu bus stop taking freeway to Gordons and so forth and RTA has done nothing about. They all line up at Konedobu bus stop everyday and you can not miss them. Are the RTA blind? RTA need to wake and stop talking too much and do something

  • Thankyou so much CEO Mr. N. Terema
Is it only for POM or Lae as well?
I am asking because bus crews in Lae also do similar abuse to the passenger’s here in Lae.
Is that phone number only for POM residences use or nation wide?

  • Terema you need to leave your chair and come with your officers to the roads and see for yourself what happens daily at the main bus stops, at traffic lights and on the roads. Terema you inap lo toktok tumas. You need to be full of strategies to deal with ongoing PMV issues.

  • NCD roads have been upgraded to a super standard, so why do we have substandard PMV buses still on the road operating. Particular interest is PMV buses operating between Hohola and Gordons they charge K1. Can the RTA publish the BUS ROUTE NUMBERS and DESTINATIONS and display them on all bus stops for guidance to travelling public. And can NCD take ownership of the main bus routes in the city so that conjestion at BS is stopped. The city has a large workforce and School Children who deserve quality and affordable service.

  • RTA has been in existence for a long time, a lot of fines were missed for governments collections. It’s about time they get their act together remove unroad worthy vehicles, parking illegally, failure to upkeep of vehicles. This is not just public vehicles but private vehicles as well. And stop the bribery pasin

  • RTA AH HO. It reminds us of always seeing very corrupt Officers soliciting money from Offsider and Drivers, and seeing all the unregistered Buses and unworthy vehicles on the road in Port Moresby. and and all a year around with unplanned and ad hoc activities from the Authority. The Public are very frustrated.

  • RTA should remove all the old and rusty buses and Taxi’s in the nations capital. its about time that we go for a change with PMV’s and taxi’s. Only Register good running and operating condition buses and taxi’s.

  • RTA needs to come clear on this matter as it is of paramount importance to the citizens. This is supposed to be for the whole country traffic systems even including the Highlands High way fares. the Highlands Okuk highway is feeding the 90% of MOMASE regions population interms of fresh vegetables and human resources. PLEASE RTA NEED TO COME CLEAR AS THE PMV BUSES ARE CHARGING CRAZY K100 to K200.00 PER HEAD betwen LAE TO MT HAGEN!!!!

  • RTA, please check the buses in Lae. Some are very unsafe for traveling passengers. Though there are rules and regulations in place to control high exhaust emissions, break lights and direction indicators, there is no proper implementation and control.
