A CROSS-bred orchid from the PNG Orchid Society and PNG Gardener has been named Den (dendrobioum) Apec 2018 – after the Apec 2018 Leader’s Summit in Port Moresby.
PNG Gardener official Lexie Tausem told The National that the orchid was the result of cross-breeding two local breeds – the Dendrobium Lasienthera and Sepik Blue.
The PNG Orchid Show was held last weekend by the PNG Orchid Society at the Sir Rabbie Namaliu Orchid Garden at Parliament House.
PNG Gardener manager Jacque Ware said the annual event was initiated by PNG Gardener and PNG Orchid Society to showcase local orchids.
“People can learn and know more on some of the orchids which are unique to PNG.
“And for the flowers and orchid lovers, they can also purchase them.”
More than 150 people from PNG and Australia attended.
Tausem said the society had previously promoted PNG’s orchids overseas.
PNG won gold medal prizes in China, Singapore and Thailand during internal orchid events.
