A MAN accused of trying to assault a seven-year-old girl was bashed up by people at the Tidal Basin area near the Papuan Compound in Lae last Thursday.

He was assaulted after people saw him taking the girl to a secluded spot, stripping her and tried to force himself on her.

They followed him and bashed him up.

Police said the girl lived with her parents in the Tais settlement community with the accused.

“He is detained but not charged yet as we are waiting for the medical report (of the girl) from doctors,” Insp Fred Kaiwa, Lae police operations commander, said.

“Appropriate action will be taken once we receive the medical report.”

The Lae community was shocked with the news which came just days after the city’s metropolitan commander Iven Lakatani warned women and girls to take precaution following an upsurge in rape cases in Lae.
