Lone female coach in tournament stands out

Of the 64 teams that were involved in National Capital District Governor’s Cup, only one club is coached by a woman.
Former PNG Orchids player Joan Kuman is at the helm of 973 Eagles who hail from 9-Mile, Morobe block on the edge of the city.
Kuman said she took the initiative to coach the team to not only pass on her knowledge and experience of the game but to also mentor and guide them into better improve on their talent and potential.
She said she was proud that the youths had accepted being coached by a woman and had actually respect her take her as role model to set their dreams in rugby league.
Kuman, said her team had qualified for the pennant final against Erima Wanderers yesterday at the Kone Tigers Oval.
She said the majority of players comprises of raw talents from Morobe and to secure the finals is well deserved.
“We missed out on the NCD Governor’s Cup finals to mire experienced teams with Digicel Cup players,” Kuman said.
“It’s good experience that helped the boys to come this far as settlement team.”
She said the players that shone for Eagles over the course of the tournament were Nigel Tom, Joseph Kora, Ray Peter, Moresby Martin and Amos Martin.
“We respected all the teams we played and made sure we played accordingly.”
