A WOMAN is now a high-ranking member of the administration of Kainantu Town, in Eastern Highlands.
Newly elected two lord mayor, Jericho Mamati has appointed Kainantu urban local level government ward three councillor Lynn Aike Ekaeka as deputy lord mayor.
“We are negatively known as ‘Cowboy Town’ but we have no guns or horses; we are human beings like anyone else, Mamati said.
“We are now getting into serious mode to change for the better and I, as the lord mayor and a firm believer in gender equality, want to provide a balance of power in decision-making for Kainantu Urban council.”
Mamati said there were many new development initiatives coming through the government system that needed a balance of power to be fair to both genders.
He said he would appoint two more women to be on the urban council to bring the total number to five.
Two women elected as ward councillors earlier are Ronda Julie Tosa (ward one) Chrissilla Abiko (ward four).
“We have gone into the bottom-up planning concept of Governor Julie Soso,” he said.
