LOW frequency earthquakes and browning of vegetation at the Mt Tavurvur volcano in East New Britain has indicated a sustained eruptive activity, the Rabaul Volcano Observatory has reported.
In its situation report yesterday, the RVO said during the reporting period from Jan 26 to March 12, Tavurvur remained quiet until Wednesday morning when very weak and slow ash emissions started to occur.
The pale grey vapour emissions rose 50 to 100 metres above the vent before spreading.
There were no audible noises or glow. Only the summit area of the volcano experienced ash-fall.
The RVO said Mt Tavurvur was expected to remain quiet, with occasional ash emissions.
It said tremors or occurrence of low frequency earthquakes, vegetation browning on Turagunan and the inflationary trend suggested that the system may return to sustained activity.
