Losuia in Milne Bay started receiving normal airline flights on Friday after being closed for almost a year.
This was after the airport was closed last July due to an election-related conflict.
Deputy Governor and Kiriwina local level government president, Tom Cameron, initiated the reopening of the airport with the help of Governor John Luke Crittin and Kiriwina-Goodenough MP Douglas Tomuriesa.
Crittin and Tomuriesa paid K50,000 each to landowners to allow the airport to be reopened.
Cameron said the airport was in good condition and welcomed its reopening.
He said the reopening would help the people of Kiriwina to travel to Alotau instead of braving the rough seas.
“A lot of innocent people suffered and this kind of act should not happen again in the future,” Cameron said.
He was thankful to the Government and paramount chief Daniel Pulayasi for talking to the people.
“I am grateful the people are at peace now and it should not be a problem anymore,” Cameron said.
