THE use of mobile phones by citizens and police has been an effective medium in combating crime in the Madang.
Provincial police commander Supt Anthony Wagambie Jnr said in a report that the police communication and work had been made efficient and effective with citizen informants located in strategic locations.
Wagambie said police mobile numbers were issued to the public while police had informants located all over the province supplying information of armed hold-ups, break-ins and other activities directly with the police.
“I would also like to thank law abiding citizens for giving information to police to successfully capturing escapees and I further appeal for community support in reporting crimes taking place or about to take place.
“Through good community networking, police operations will be conducted effectively,” he said.
Wagambie said when people take ownership and report such incidences, in the long run, they make their community safer for themselves and their families.
He said innocent people had become victims of the actions of criminals but police could not be everywhere all the time and assistance from the public was needed.
“Only through community support can police do a good job in getting criminals off the street and ensuring public safety.
“I strongly warn criminal elements to refrain from carrying out robberies and terrorising the travelling public as police will not tolerate and not hesitate to use maximum force on criminals using violence and intimidation on the travelling public.”
Wagambie also warned individuals harbouring criminals that police would deal with them as criminal would not have roamed around causing havoc if they were not supported by such sympathisers.
He commended his special operations team for a job well done in apprehending dangerous criminals who have
been threat to the community.
However, he said special operations would continue with the setting up of the Madang police special operations team (SOT) comprimising of unit from the rapid response unit, traffic and dog unit.
He said they had performed extremely well in seeing the number of serious crimes such as armed robberies and car thefts reduced.
